The Waltham Cross & Waltham Abbey Tour
Join me as we visit the ancient towns of Waltham Cross and Waltham Abbey
Waltham Cross was named after the mythical “holy cross” which was supposed to have had healing properties. However, the town’s main claim to fame is the best surviving example of the Eleanor Cross, a medieval monument to love and loss.
We then journey to the tranquil River Lea, pass the historic Gunpowder Mills, before arriving in the notable town of Waltham Abbey which is bathed in history. At its centre is the monastic Abbey itself, favoured by Henry VIII, until the Reformation, and believed to be the final resting place of King Harold II, who was famously defeated at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
